RE: Full Proposal – BGSU Doctor of Philosophy in Statistics
Dear Harry and RACGS Colleagues:
In keeping within the RACGS Guidelines and Procedure Section IV, D “Degree Designation Change” please find attached a full proposal to create a Ph.D. in Statistics at Bowling
Green State University. As advised by RACGS, we are not submitting a Program Development Plan since the specialization in statistics has been offered within the Ph.D. in Mathematics since its inception. Over half of
the doctoral graduates have consistently specialized in Statistics and the Statistics faculty members are very research active
and have achieved genuine prominence in their field. The curriculum of the proposed degree will not be changed in any significant
manner and no additional resources will be necessary in order to offer the highest quality program.
The doctoral degree in Statistics will not only benefit prospective students as they seek employment, but it will also allow
the program more direct access to the best graduate students who seek to pursue a degree in statistics rather than in mathematics.
We believe the past success of the specialization in statistics will serve as a platform from which to launch this high quality
and focused doctoral program.
The Ph.D. in Statistics has been approved by the Graduate Council, the Faculty Senate and the Board of Trustees.
To expedite the distribution process, the proposal as well as appendices A-C can be accessed by clicking on the links in the
left navigation bar. All files are in PDF format.
We look forward to the reviews and responses from our RACGS colleagues by January 27, 2005.
Sincerely,
Heinz Bulmahn Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate College
