The Graduate College is pleased to announce two outstanding new funding opportunities for graduate students at BGSU.
Katzner Fund - In early 1998, after 13 years as Vice Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate College, Dr. Louis Katzner decided
to return to what attracted him to higher education in the first place – the study and teaching of philosophy. One of his
top priorities during his tenure as the Graduate Dean was to increase the support available to graduate students for conducting
research and attending professional meetings. Dr. Katzner organized an initiative through the Development Office called The
Campaign for Graduate Student Excellence and he asked that any recognition of his service to the BGSU learning community be
in the form of donations to this campaign.
By the time he returned to the faculty during the summer of 1998 over 750 faculty, staff, alumni and friends of Dr. Katzner
had pledged their support to build an endowment to support graduate student research and travel at BGSU. The endowment has
continued to grow since 1998, with the continued support of individuals committed to maximizing the learning, knowledge and
development opportunities of our graduate students.
We are pleased to announce that the endowment has reached the financial earmark which will allow us to make the second set
of awards. The Graduate College will coordinate the distribution of $10,000 each year to supplement the cost of graduate student
research and professional development activities for graduate students at Bowling Green State University.
University Bookstore Fund - We are also fortunate that the University Bookstore approached us with a desire to support graduate education. They are
particularly interested in supporting graduate student travel and professional engagement. This represents the wishes of the
Bookstore staff to support the academic mission of the University and thank the University community for their patronage.
The University Bookstore is contributing an additional $15,000 per year to this endeavor.
We are most grateful to Dr. Louis Katzner, Trustee Professor of Philosophy, and to the University Bookstore for creating this
opportunity to invest in the education of our graduate students.
To simplify the application and evaluation process, only one application will be used for both funds. The Fall Semester application deadline is November 15; Spring Semester deadline is March 15. Questions should be directed to Dr. Deanne Snavely (2-9450)
